28 million kids are now eligible to receive their Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines now that the shots are approved for 5 to 11-year-olds, according to the AP.

We wanted to see how many kids in NC fall in this age group and determine where they live. Using the 2021 single age population projection data from the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM), we calculated the number of individuals aged 5 through 11 by county across the state.

Statewide, 880,045 children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible for the vaccine. The most kids in that age category live in Mecklenburg (103,811 kids), followed by Wake (94,976) and Guilford (44,059). You can see how many kids are living in each of our 100 counties in the map below:

Who’s next?

The next group of eligible people to get the vaccine are our state’s youngest residents.

There are 593,748 children aged 0-4 living in North Carolina. We tallied the number of individuals aged 0 through 4 by county to determine the five most populous counties, which are exactly the same as the counties where the most 5 to 11-year-olds live: Mecklenburg (71,873), Wake (63,166), and Guilford (30,314). Cumberland and Forsyth Counties round out the top five.
