The U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program released their 2023 population estimates for Cities and Towns last week.
As of July 1, 2023 there were an estimated 911,311 residents in Charlotte, up 1.7% from an estimated 895,704 on July 1, 2022. Burlington also passed a major milestone, passing 60,000 residents as of 2023. Durham, with an estimated 296,186 residents in 2023, might be the next city to hit a major milestone. Based on the growth between 2022 and 2023, Durham will pass 300K residents (or come very close) in 2024.
With its 911K residents, Charlotte remains the largest municipality in the state. Raleigh is a distant second with an estimated 482,295 residents, up 1.9% from 473,423 in 2022. Fontana Dam remains the smallest municipality in the state with 11 residents.
Between 2022 and 2023
The five largest places in the state—Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem—each have a combined population of 2.2 million or 21% of the state’s population.
